18 October 2010

Got up and after ordering some finish lumber for a So Ogden job, I headed to Legacy with my mountain bike. Cloudy and cool kept the trail clear of other people. I think
I only saw about 12 others usin g the trail. And no wind :)

It's been so long that I forgot I had my solid rubber tires on until I had made it half way down Legacy. These tires do not get punctures but they are heavier and cause the pedeler to work alot more. It's also been a long time and I'm way out of shape. But I made it to the end and back. Got to get back on the bike more often.

I'm not doing very well with my goal for this year. But never the less I got out tonight and rode Legacy Parkway. Sun set before I made it to NSL and it dark and cooler by time I made it back to Farmington Station.

I had forgotten about the head winds on Legacy Parkway until this morning. About the Farmington/Centerville border is where the winds from the south start. As I left Farmington Station I was seriously thinking of doing two laps today, but after fighting the wind all the way to North Salt Lake I decided one lap is all I've got today. Was back home by 11:00 am

It was the Ward Party tonight in Farmington so after installing the solid rubber tire on my mountain bike, headed to the Farmington park then onto Legacy Parkway. It has been a long time since I rode this trail and noticed lots of improvements. Also noticed how dry everything looks. Road home in the dark.

14 August 2010 Bike the Bear

Got up at 4:00 am so I could drive to Garden City for the annual BSA Bike the Bear. It was 49 degrees at 7:00 am when the ride began. 5 and a half hours later pulled back into the church parking lot having completed one loop. I did double back several times rather then pedal slowly up hills. The last 5-6 miles I noticed my front tire was low and so had to stop several times to pump up that tire so I could proceed. While pedaling I decided I needed to lose 25 pounds before the biking season turns cold. I'll record my progress here on these pages. My goal is to weigh 179 lbs.

New adventure tonight. Rode the Weber River trails beginning in Riverdale. Headed north but the trails were not marked very well and so got lost several times. Finally arrived at the Rainbow Gardens and noticed the milage was exactly the same as Legacy Parkway, 12.6 miles. On the way back didn't get lost and it was a lot shorter, but mostly in the dark. Got back to the car at 10:30 pm. Return trip was barely more than 10 miles.

The forecast was slight winds (4-6 mph) the actual was quite abit more than that. Headed to Willard Bay and rode around it in about 1.55 hours. Decided to do it again but it took longer the second time around. Dirt road with about 7 miles of very rutted and uneven weed covered road. Wish they'd grade it down a little. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Another hot day and figured it was a great day to ride the dirt road around the dike at Willard Bay. Strong southerly winds today. Hardly any boats out at all. Rode 5 or 6 miles totally free and very nice. The whole west side. Got a good soapy wash down too.

So after spending 5 days at Girls Camp and one day at Camp New Fork with our Deacons I was finally able to find my bike again. Decided to ride around Willard Bay. It wasd hot but hardly any wind. Boats were thick out on the lake but I was able to space my rides out with 3 quick dips in the water. Beautiful day

After a HB text to AmySue and a small YW project, I was able to drive to Willard Bay So Marina and ride my mountain bike around the dike. The wind was out of the south again and pretty stiff. As I started out I was not sure I wanted to ride in the wind, but quickly talked myself into it. I always head north towards the North Marina first and then west and around the lake that way. This meant the wind was in my face for the last half. About half way around I turned around and rode one mile back, just to up my daily total. I also took a quick swim in the lake today. Air Temps were in the 90's and the water felt very good.

Wind was predicted for Legacy today so I headed north and ended up at Willard Bay South Marina. Slight breeze to start with but by the middle of my second lap around the pond the wind was very stiff out of the south (straight in my face). Yep made it around Willard Bay twice today. Took me just a few minutes over 3 hours too.

25/26 June 2010

Tonight is the annual Midnight Madness Bike ride at Antelope Island. Drove out to the causeway about 8:00pm and parked just outside the entrance to the causeway. At first they weren't going to let us park in the lot at all. Some people when they get a little power, it goes to their heads.

Rode the mountain bike across the causeway (7 miles) and then had about an hour before the ride began. Right at 10:00pm they let us go, all 1250 of us. Rode out to the Garr Fielding Ranch house (11.4 miles) had a cup of fruit, a banana and some lemonade. Lots of spandex and bugs. We had a slight head wind all the way from the marina and was looking forward to the ride back. It would help push us up the hill. Well about 1 mile into the return trip, at 12:00 midnight, the wind changed to from the north, then the wind changed to a gale and lots of people were off their bikes walking due to they could not pedal against the wind.

Finally made it back to the marina where everyone turned in and loaded their bikes onto their vehicles. Not us, kept pedeling into the gale, now there were whitecaps out in the water. Finally gave in and started to walk. About a mile later, a race volenteer stopped and offered us a ride back to the entrance. We took it in a heart beat. Got back to the car about 1:45am.

Tore my mountain bike apart th is morning and decided I'd need some grease for my ball bearings. Left it tore apart and grabbed Carrie's road bike (shhhh) pumped up the tires and headed to Legacy. This round trip usually takes about 2 hours on a mountain bike, today I did it in 1 hour 25 minutes. 10:15 to 11:40 am. Not much breeze either.

Went to Bear Lake to enjoy the weekend. Friday morning awoke and drove to Laketown City Park. From there we rode our bikes to the Idaho State Park. The forecast was for gusty winds all day, but as pulled into the Farmington Station I could hardly feel a breeze. So hopped on the mountain bike (the Beast) and headed south down Legacy. At mile post 2, the winds started and didn't let up any until I reached the end of the trail in NSL. The trip home was more enjoyable.

Strong South winds today made the return trip back on Legacy very enjoyable. Somedays the only way I continue to fight the winds is to remember the big picture and look forward to what will be more enjoyable in the end. 10:30 - 1:00 pm. Rode the extra 3 miles around Bountiful pond so my total's miles will balance around 25's again.

So went back up on Legacy for the race back to the suburban.

Decided if I'm going to ride my bike, I'll have to do it alone. After cutting a walnut tree in 5 foot sections and loading the pieces into the back of a pick up and also onto a trailer, decided my back and knees needed more punishment. Drolve to Farmington and Legacy Parkway. The weather is getting hot, especially at 11:30-1:00 pm. Very enjoyable.

Memorial Day found me at the Bear Lake Cabin. My parents and oldest Brother and his wife were already there. Parked the car at the cabin on Friday night and then Saturday morning unhitched the mountain bike and headed down the hill to make my first attempt of biking around the Bear Lake. Rode from the cabin to Sweetwater condos and then turned right and rode to Laketown, then on around the lake. By the time we got to the power plant I knew we were not going to make the entire loop. Called Landon to come rescue us. We met him at the St Charles LDS Church.

Went into SLC to work on Electrical outlets. Couldn't smell smoke so figured it was a good day and headed home but had to stop for a ride down Legacy. Very cloudy and cool. The wind was blowing from the North today so it meant I had to pump harder on the return trip. I can't remember when I rode this trail without some serious head wind. I also decided to begin again listening to the B of M on my mp3. Made it through to 1 Nephi 17.

It was snowing this morning as I awoke. After making out an invoice, I grabbed my bike and headed out. Began down the trail from Farmington about 12:30 pm and peddled into a head wind all 12.7 miles. At times I found myself thinking I'd turn around and count today as a partial. But kept thinking how nice the return trip would be. Every tenth of a mile into the wind meant Two tenths for the day. I talked myself clear to the end and truely enjoyed the trip back. My MP3 player died along the way down so it was a quiet bike ride.

Since it is my day and was told I can do what ever I want to.... And since I can't do that I decided to go for another bike ride down Legacy. Pretty daring if you ask me, since this is only the second day of bike serious bike riding and my calluses aren't formed yet. The sky has cleared up since this molrning ride and hardly a cloud in the sky. It was getting late and by the time I had completed to trip it was dark and getting cold. The trail was very busy tonight.

After pruning Bob Peterson's apple tree, I headed off to Legacy Parkway and rode the mountain bike tro the end and back. Nice thing about this ride is it takes about 2 hours to complete and that is what a General Conference session is also. Today I listened to the April 2010 P'hood session. Loved Elder Rasband's talk and also President Uoctdorf's on Patience. Got back to the burban and drove to SLC to work at Berrett's remodel.

17 May 2010

After months of idle waiting in the garage, I got out the Mountain bike today for a serious ride. I've been out a couple of times this year. The first time was down legacy parkway only to discover a slow leak in my front tire. I was out 3 miles and on the return trip had to pump the tire up 3 times before getting back to the buran. Other trips were about the same lenghths. I did get a new tire from Amazon (should have seen the packing box it came in) to replace the old tire which you could see the tire tread showing through.

Today I was unsure if I'd make it the whole length on Legacy but decided to do it, on the very spring like day. About 6 miles into the road I received a long awaited phone call and was able to pull over and visit. Afterwards was able to complete the entire trip in spite of a stiff wind out of the southwest. Got back to Farmington Station and felt great. So begins my 2010 biking goals
